Week 3 18.01.21

Monday 18th January 2021

Good morning Nursery children and families and welcome to another week of fun learning activities!

Thank you parents for your lovely, encouraging messages and for engaging with the activities set out - Mrs Lisle and Mrs Heslop are loving seeing your pictures and videos each day, so thank you!

Phonics

For our phonics job today you will need:

a plastic carrier bag,

2 glasses and a spoon,

a packet of rice (unopened),

and some uncooked pasta in a plastic pot!

If you have a copy of the story 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' you might want to read that first, if not re-watch the YouTube video of the story from Friday.

Using the props we are going to make the sound effects from the story. Try and say the words as we go along, retelling the story and repeating the phrases in the right order.

Challenge: Could you make your own map of the story, drawing out the pictures? Do you have another favourite story that you could add sound effects to? make a video and send to Mrs Lisle on Tapestry.

Maths

For our maths today, you will need to build some towers of blocks, 1 -5 then 6-10. Look at the different ways of making the numbers by adding 1 brick at a time.  Start off with 1, then add another 1 "One more than one is 2", then have 2 bricks "one more than 2 is 3". Continue with this all the way up to 10.

Using the 5 or 10 frame and your building bricks or circular sweets winktry and find the different ways of making different numbers e.g. 2 and 2 makes 4, 1 and 2 makes 3, 5 and 5 makes 10. Show your grown up and talk about the different ways.

Topic

For our topic work today I would like you to build a cave for a bear - could be a polar bear or a grizzly bear (like our phonics story).

Gather the materials you will need and choose a good place, e.g. under a table.  How can you make your cave warm and cosy for the bear? What materials will you need?  I would love to see some pictures on Tapestry of your bear caves!

Phonics

For our phonics job today I would like you to log into Phonics Play and play the Super Smoothie game. Can you hear the sounds at the beginning of the words and put all of the things in the blender that have the same sound?

Challenge: Looking at your toys and objects at home can you make collections of things that all have the same sound at the beginning e.g. spoon, sock, soap, snake, sausage etc or panda, pear, pig, pot.

Maths

For maths today watch the Numberblocks episode all about 8. Talk about 'oct' means 8 and talk about things that have oct at the begining e.g. octopus, octagon (shape) and octonauts!  Can the children find the numeral 8, a domino/dot pattern with 8. Count out 8 toys to demonstrate their understanding of '8'.

Challenge:Can your children draw an octopus with 8 tentacles, a spider with 8 legs or make an octogon shape with 8 sides?

We have been learning all about polar bears - do you know how they keep warm? Tell your grown ups your ideas.

You are going to do an experiment to find out how polar bears keep warm in very cold conditions in the arctic.

Wednesday 20th January 2021

Good morning everyone! Here are our Nursery jobs for today...

Phonics

Today in phonics I would like you to play a game called 'Cross the river'. For this game you will need:

A piece of material - to make a river on the floor,

CVC pictures or objects (cat, dog, bus, sun, hat etc)

To play the game, lay out the material on the floor and put the objects/pictures on one side of the river. Grown ups you have to 'sound talk' e.g. c-a-t and your child has to identify the word, pick up the picture or object and jump over the material river onto the other side and put down the object or picture.

Have fun with this one!

Maths

For todays job - using the material from Phonics I would like you to make your own pond for 5 little ducks and and 5 little speckled frogs. Can you sing the rhymes and use toys/pictures for the ducks and frogs on the log?

Thursday 21st January 2021

Good morning everyone...it looks like it has been snowing again! I hope you can get outside and have some fun playing in the snow again today!

Phonics

For todays phonics job I would like you to get some animal toys and some bricks and material and make your own zoo, putting different animals in different parts of the zoo - make sure you build walls around to keep the animals safe! You will also need a vehicle that can drive through/or around the zoo, to see the different animals (could be a train or a car or a bus).

Now I want you to think about the sounds that you hear at the beginning of the animals names. Can you find any animals that have the same sound at the beginning, for example, panda, polar bear, pig, parrot etc.

Now we're going to say a rhyme using our vehicle driving through the zoo - my vehicle is a bus:

"Bertha the bus is going to the zoo, what will she see as she passes through!"

And then Mrs Lisle will say "a parrot, a pig, a panda a penguin and a polar bear too"

What animals will you find in your zoo today that have the same sound at the beginning?

Have fun playing with your zoo after your phonics job today!

Maths

For your maths job today I would like you to learn the polar bear song '5 Little Polar Bears'.

For your activity you are going to be measuring the different sized polar bears using cubes/building blocks, Count out how many and then have a go at writing the different numbers.  Can you guess how many cubes each polar bear will be?

Happy Friday everyone!

I hope you have had a fun week...you have all been working so hard at home and Mrs Lisle and Mrs Heslop are so proud of you all!

Phonics

For your Fun Friday Phonics job I would like you to get a small piece of material or tissue for each hand and you are going to do a write dance to your favourite song!  You have to make big actions with both arms, making lovely straight up and down lines, big and small circles, round and round, a rainbow shape and some humps! This is all good practise for handwriting patterns!

Then you will need to get a plate or shallow tray and sprinkle some sugar or salt onto it. With your finger I would like you to make some letter shapes from your names and try the patterns from our write dance actions too!

Write dance with Mrs Lisle!

Maths

For your maths job today I would like you to make a cake or biscuit shop - you could even make your own to sell! Grown ups, weighing out and measuring ingredients, counting cups of flour and spoonfuls of sugar is all excellent maths work for children of all ages, aswell as setting a timer for the cooking time etc. Lots of skills to learn!

Do you know the song '5 currant buns in a baker's shop...' You could sing this song, but change the words for whatever sweet treat you have in the house or that you have made!

Use cuddly toys or your family members to come to the shop to buy a cake or biscuit and take it away - use this opportunity to count back from a number and instead of 1 more, you will have 1 less each time - just like the polar bear song from yesterday!

Have fun eating the treats after playing the shop game! smiley
