Roman Mosaics

Roman mosaics were made up of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of tiny coloured stones and gems called tesserae. Each mosaic piece was stuck to the floor with mortar, a type of cement. Mosaics would show pictures of Roman history and everyday Roman life. I would like you to make your own Roman mosaics using coloured paper or card. Have a look at the photographs for inspiration.

Some of our Home Learning is going to be about an adventure story, which will be introduced next week. Before we introduce this, we are going to be thinking about castles.

I would like read chapter 1 up to slide 7 then

Complete the following activities.

  •  Using a dictionary create a glossary for the following parts of a castle; battlements, drawbridge, dungeon, keep, moat, parapet, portcullis, tower, arrow slits and turrets.
  • I would then like you to draw a picture of the castle and label each part.

Alnwick Castle

 

Alnwick Castle is a famous castle in Northumberland and scenes from Harry Potter were filmed there. I would like you to answer the following questions about Alnwick Castle.

  • When was Alnwick Castle built?
  • How far is the castle from the Scottish border? 
  • What was used to defend the castle?
  • When did the king of Scotland, William the Lion, attack the castle?
  • Who lives at the castle today?
  • Who designed the gardens?
  • What TV shows or films have been filmed at Alnwick Castle

I would like you to learn the following spellings everyday this week.

We are going to be starting our new adventure story today but I am not going to tell you the title. I want you to have a read of the extracts and answer the following 3 questions:

 

1. Who is this lady?

2. What do the clothes worn by the lady suggest?

3. What can you see in the background of the pictures?

I would then like you to have a look at the image on the first slide and create thought bubbles about what might be worrying the queen.

The next part of our adventure story...
I would like you to draw a picture of a troll. When you draw your troll think about; what its head and face look like, its arms and legs are like and its feet and legs are like. 

What do trolls eat?

 

Like all living things  trolls need to eat to stay alive. Different animals eat different things and trolls are no different. Some trolls eat, birds, insects, fish and mammals and these trolls are carnivores. Some trolls eat plants, grass, leaves, nuts, seeds and fruits and these trolls are herbivores. Some trolls eat a plants and animals and these trolls are omnivores. I would like you to imagine you are having a dinner party for some trolls and want you to create a three course meal. You need to decide what you will serve on your menu depending whether the trolls carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores.

Can you remember drawing a picture of Jesus' Baptism and including all 3 parts of the Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit)? Look at the Kenning poem below. (A Kenning is a short poetic line to say what something does)

 

 

Can you copy the Kenning and illustrate using small pictures for each description. I would love to see some!smiley

Troll Hunters continued..
 I would like you to draw a map for a kingdom. We know there must be a castle, probably on a hill, and there must be a forest far away from the castle. Between the castle and the forest, there must also be a village and fields with sheep for the trolls to steal but what other things are going to be on the map? You may want to look at maps of Middle Earth and Narnia for ideas. I look forward to seeing your maps.
